World's First Patented Technology for Retaining Hydrogen in Jelly

Hydrogen (H₂) is an extremely small, lightweight molecule that can readily escape over time. As a result, retaining high concentrations of hydrogen in food products over extended periods has long been a technical challenge.
Shinryo Corporation, a member of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group, addressed this challenge with its world's first patented technology.
Drawing on its extensive expertise in chemical engineering, Shinryo developed a process that traps hydrogen gas within the jelly in the form of tiny bubbles, achieving a hydrogen concentration of 30–40 ppm in each 10 g stick.
The jelly is also packaged in specially designed aluminum pouches that help prevent hydrogen from escaping. In the manufacturer's storage tests, the jelly maintained a hydrogen concentration of at least 30 ppm for 24 months at room temperature.
Furthermore, the product is manufactured in a facility certified to FSSC 22000, an internationally recognized food safety management system standard. This ensures that production takes place under rigorous food safety and quality management procedures.
* Patent No. 6561424 (manufacturing process patent).
* The hydrogen concentration of 30–40 ppm is based on measurements conducted by the manufacturer.
* Each stick of the pet version contains 5 g.
A Food with Function Claims Designed to Support Sleep Quality

High-Concentration Hydrogen Jelly is registered in Japan as a Food with Function Claims (FFC), with a focus on sleep quality (Notification No. H1120).
Molecular hydrogen (H₂), the functional ingredient in this product, has been reported to help improve perceived sleep quality, specifically the feeling of having slept longer, in people experiencing stress.
Japan's Food with Function Claims (FFC) system allows manufacturers to market foods with specific health-related claims based on scientific evidence submitted to the Consumer Affairs Agency, under the manufacturer's own responsibility.
As Japan's first Food with Function Claims product featuring molecular hydrogen as its functional ingredient, the High-Concentration Hydrogen Jelly series offers a convenient way to support healthy sleep habits as part of your daily routine.
* Japan's Food with Function Claims (FFC) system does not apply to pet food. This product is a pet-friendly adaptation of a functional food originally developed for human consumption and notified under Japan's FFC system.
A Commitment to Scientific Evidence Through University Research Collaborations

Shinryo Corporation, a member of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group and the developer of High-Concentration Hydrogen Jelly, collaborates with Japanese universities and research institutions to scientifically investigate the potential benefits of molecular hydrogen.
In a joint study with Kyushu University, 29 healthy women experiencing stress consumed three sticks of hydrogen-enriched jelly daily for four weeks.
The results showed a statistically significant improvement in perceived sleep quality (the feeling of having slept longer) compared with the group that consumed air-filled jelly. These findings provided part of the scientific evidence supporting the product's notification under Japan's Food with Function Claims (FFC) system.

Shinryo also continues to advance research into molecular hydrogen in collaboration with a wide range of universities, research institutions, companies, and medical facilities, including the National Defense Medical College, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Tokyo University of Technology, Keio University, and Hiroshima University.

Why Is Hydrogen Attracting Attention?
The Power of Hydrogen, Part 1: Relationship with Oxidative Stress
In our bodies, various reactive oxygen species are generated during normal life processes. While some reactive oxygen species are necessary for healthy bodily functions, when the balance between their production and elimination is disrupted, it leads to a state known as "oxidative stress."
In 2007, a Japanese research group reported that hydrogen (H₂) selectively reduces hydroxyl radicals, which are highly reactive oxygen species. This research was published in *Nature Medicine*, subsequently sparking global research into the relationship between hydrogen and oxidative stress.

The Power of Hydrogen, Part 2: Relationship with Mitochondria
Mitochondria play a vital role in our cells, producing the energy (ATP) necessary for life activities. However, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are also generated during the energy production process, meaning mitochondria are deeply linked to oxidative stress.
In recent years, research on the relationship between hydrogen (H₂) and mitochondria has also progressed. In addition to its relationship with oxidative stress, hydrogen is being studied for its impact on mitochondrial function, intracellular signaling, and mitochondrial quality control (such as mitophagy).
The Power of Hydrogen, Part 3: Relationship with Inflammation
Inflammation is a crucial defense mechanism the body has to protect itself from stimuli like infections or injuries. However, when inflammatory reactions become excessive or prolonged, they can affect tissues and cells via inflammatory cytokines and other mediators.
In recent years, research on the relationship between hydrogen (H₂) and inflammatory responses has also progressed. Specifically, basic research has reported on the relationship between hydrogen and signaling pathways involved in inflammation, such as inflammatory cytokines, NF-κB, and NLRP3.
The Power of Hydrogen, Part 4: Relationship with Vascular Function
The "vascular endothelium," which lines the inside of blood vessels, plays a significant role in regulating blood flow and maintaining vessel health. Nitric oxide (NO), produced by the vascular endothelium, is known as a key signaling molecule involved in vasodilation.
Conversely, increased oxidative stress can affect vascular endothelial function and reduce nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. This has led to extensive research into the relationship between oxidative stress and vascular function.
Recent studies have also examined the relationship between hydrogen (H₂) and vascular function. Beyond its role in oxidative stress, hydrogen's relationship with nitric oxide pathways and endothelial function is being investigated in both basic and clinical research.

Ongoing Hydrogen Research Worldwide
The biological effects of hydrogen (H₂) continue to be researched from various perspectives, including oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondria, intracellular signaling, and vascular function. New research and review papers are published frequently.
Today, research extends beyond basic studies using cells and animals to include human clinical trials using various methods such as hydrogen gas inhalation and hydrogen-infused water.
